Last weekend we took another
trip to Downtown LA. This time, to visit an old establishment for
the very first time! We went to the Grand Central Market in the heart of Bunker Hill.
The Grand Central Market has been in existence since 1917!
But I'm sure it's undergone some major changes recently.
Even as we walked through, we see construction and new shops
everywhere. Certainly, places like Eggslut
did not exist a hundred years ago! We really enjoyed browsing all
the eateries and got the best cup of coffee we've had in a very long
time! If you are ever there, we highly recommend getting a cup of
joe from G&B. Oh, and you can enjoy your coffee while taking
a quick ride on Angel's Flight across the street. I also loved all the ethnic eateries, including a place where I got to try pig stomach taco, yummy!
|
The Grand Central Market produce section.
| Don't be fooled, this maybe chocolate, but it's not ice cream!
| Eggslut, one of the hipper, new eateries.
| Beans, spices, and exotic foods.
| Abundance of dining tables and chairs inside the market.
| The market extends outside to include new hip places, including a little bar on the side of this BBQ place.
| G&B, the best coffee in town. But great coffee doesn't come cheap nor fast. | Enjoy a view of Downtown LA while you dine.

Recently, most of our kids' clothes are stone wash.
No kidding, no matter how hard I try to make sure that I empty
all the pockets of the kids' clothes before throwing them into the
machine, I will find at least four stones after I pull the clothes out.
This is all the great work of Buzz. For some reason, he has
gotten into the habit of picking up random rocks and putting them into
his pockets. I think I'll enforce a new rule, empty all pockets
the minute we get home from school!
|
I've already pull out three rocks before the wash and still end up with five more tor this load.

Besides peacocks, guess who else
likes to visit our backyard? I didn't know to be mad or be glad
to see this little cat enjoying herself on my bench. Since I rarely
have time to sit and relax in my garden, I guess I shouldn't mind
someone else doing so. Of course our guard dog was sleeping on
the job again.

A month after our DC trip, I'm
still catching up and posting more pics! I have just been very
tired lately. This work-life balance is very difficult,
especially when we have big changes going on. Our kids have
transitioned to their new school and things can't go smoother!
Buzz has already made lots of new friends. After one week,
Ahgoo stopped crying at drop-offs in the morning. She's doing
very well now. Turns out that the old school closure effected me
harder than anyone in the family. I had developed very close
bonds with all of the teachers and it still saddens me to drive by the
old school each day knowing that it's now empty. But life goes on
and I am very happy that the kids are adjusting so well. I am
also still getting used to the new driving route since the new school
is not quite as "on the way" to work as the old school. So
between work, home, kids, and everything else in between, I am
completely spent by the time I crawl into bed. I really need a
vacation from life! In any case, I hope you'll enjoy the pics I
took of our trip to DC. I try to post a few non-traditional
photos of our capital.
|
Nearly impossible to get a picture of both kids with nice smiles!
| US Mint! We didn't get to go in but it's on my must-visit list next time!
| Vietnam Memorial.
| Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.
| Thomas Jefferson, I like him.
| Franklin Roosevelt Memorial.
| The Capital Building.
| The Vietnam Memorial surroundings.

One evening last week, while Mr.
BAW was away on a business trip, the kids and I had just finished
dinner and was about to settle down for a little Curious George
before bed when suddenly we heard a "FLOP!" We looked out to the
backyard and I yelled, "A peacock!!" We regularly see peacocks roaming the streets
near our house and we hear them everyday. But we've never seen
one in our backyard since living here the past six months! These
birds are HUGE! We have a pretty high cement fence in the back
but I guess these birds can glide/fly pretty high. I immediately
ran upstairs to grab my camera but when I can back down I realized that
Ahgoo was pretty scared by the peacock! I grabbed her and Buzz
and we Facetimed Mr. BAW and showed him the peacock. He jokingly
told us to stay inside and not let Toby out either, since we don't know
if the peacock will get aggressive. But that scared Ahgoo even
more! The peacock trotted around for a few minutes and then flew
up to the fence and hopped over! After the excitement
wore off, we went about our business and got ready for bed. By
morning, I didn't think much of it. But when I went to get Ahgoo,
first thing she said to me was, "A peacock was in our yard!" Then
she said, "No peacock sign." She completely blew my mind!
It was then that I realized that she must have been very scared
by the peacock, so much so that she thought about it through the night.
In addition, she remembered that we have a No Big Bad Wolf Allowed
sign on our front door and she wanted one for the backyard for the
peacock! Of course, I had to make her a No Peacocks Allowed in
Backyard sign! Oh by the way, I recently learned from our Aunt,
who was an English teacher, that peacocks are males and that females
are called peahens. Peafowl is the generic term for both male and
female. This made total sense to me but for some reason I never
thought about it and have been calling both males and females peacocks!
But indeed, the one that came into our backyard was a peacock!
|
Our surprise visitor!
| He trotted around for a few minutes.
| Getting ready to "fly" up to the fence.
| My version of the peacock. Ahgoo insisted that the sign faces outside so the peacocks can see it.
