Meet Dr. Van Nostrand. This is no regular cat. This
is a cat we occasionally run into when we take Toby for a walk to our local
park. Ok, his name isn't really Dr. Van Nostrand, in fact we don't even
know if it's a he or a she. But I decided to name it Dr. Van Nostrand
in honor of the famous Seinfeld character, just because it fits. This
cat is extremely friendly and come up to play with Toby every time we bump
into him/her. Toby, as you can see, isn't quite sure what to do, as
usual. Dr. Van Nostrand lives in the house right next to the park,
we're pretty sure. But we ususally only bump into him/her in the mornings
on weekends. Well, we don't walk Toby in the morning during the week
days so we don't know if Dr. Van Nostrand hangs out there every morning or
not. But whenever we go to the park, I always wonder outloud if we were
going to bump into Dr. Van Nostrand. :-)

Dr. Van Nostrand flirting with Toby. Toby trying not to notice...
We're experiencing a crazy heat wave...it was 97 degrees by the beach today.
Ugh...hopefully we'll cool down soon, we don't have AC at the house!

Happy Autumnal Equinox! I can't believe that Fall is here. We
took advantage of the beautiful weather we're still having by spending a
Saturday afternoon at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach. I lived about
a mile away from this park for years and never visited because it isn't a
very dog-friendly park. However, after a company picnic there, I discovered
that it's a huge park with an outdoor stage for Summer concerts and a lake
full of ducks and seagulls! Though the park is not very dog friendly,
it's completely kid-friendly with multiple play areas and nice paved paths
for strollers and bikes.
We packed some lunch and took Baby out for a day of fun at the park. We
met up with our good friend AP and her baby boy DP, who is just two months
older than Baby. Unfortunately, we had to leave Toby at home since
dogs are not allowed by the lake.
I brought our SLR and took some pictures of our day at the park. If
you are ever in town, I recommend spending some time strolling Polliwog
Park. Enjoy the pictures!

Baby enjoying some chilled watermelon. He had tried watermelon twice
before this but didn't like it. This time, he decided that he actually
does like watermelon! Maybe because he saw that he buddy DP was enjoying
the watermelon so he decided to give it another chance. :-)
Baby enjoying some duck watching by the lake.
At one of several play areas for children, there was a giant lighthouse.
We took a nice stroll along the walkway that circles the lake.
|
|
|
|
It got a little chilly when the seabreeze kick in later in the afternoon.
So we put a coat on Baby. This coat came equipped with bear
ears. :-)
|
|
There's a nautical theme to the play area. Next to the lighthouse,
there was a cement boat and some stone sea creatures including a giant turtle
and a giant toad. Can't wait until Baby is old enough to explore the
play area himself.

The most unique part of this park is this outdoor gym!! I've never
seen this at any park before. It's a gated area that has these exercise
machines for working out! There is a sign that limits patrons of this
"gym" to 14 years and older. There are various exercise machines that
all utilize your own body weight as weights. There's no need for electricity
nor free weights. Now that's green! This is all free too! Sure
beats working out in a stuffy gym. Too bad we live too far from this
park, otherwise Mr. BAW would surely use the facility every night!
|
|
There are these strange contraptions scattered throughout the park. I
had no idea what they are! I thought maybe that they are some stands
for tying your dog leash to? Well, Mr. BAW informed me that they are
disc catchers for Disc Golf, of course!! Duh! He looked at me
as if I was from another planet because I had never heard of Disc Golf!
Apparently, you use a frisbee and throw it at this contraption. The
chains will "catch" the disc and drop it into the basket below. Then
you move on to the next "hole" or contraption. I had a hard time understanding
the fun in this game because to me, the fun in a game of frisbee is the catching
part. If you take the catching of the frisbee out of the picture and
only leave the throwing part, then it's just pointless. Oh well, that's
why I am not a disc golf world champion. But if you are an avid fan
of disc golf, pay a visit to Polliwog Park! :-)
By the way, happy Chinese Mid-Autumn
Festival!!! :-) It's the largest full moon of the year. Eat
a mooncake
if you get the chance.

Last month, we took a little shopping trip to Santa Monica Place to
check out the brand new mall. I used to go to that mall all the time
when I was a grad student at UCLA. It was just a standard indoor mall
with multiple levels and an attached parking garage. The real reason
I went there was for Third
Street Promenade which is directly outside of the mall. But in
the past few years, they decided to do some renovation to the mall. The
renovation has been going on for quite some time now and they recently (about
a month ago) completed the construction and we decided to bring Baby and
check it out.
Much to my surprise they didn't renovate the place, they practically demolished
it and turned the entire mall into an outdoor mall! The whole place
feels very much like the Kodak Theater Mall in Hollywood, I wondered if they
used the same architects! All of the stores are completely unfamiliar
to me. The mall is three levels with the top deck dressed up as a posh
dining area with an ocean view.
They have these dining booths pictured here as Mr. BAW and Baby are strolling
by, for shopping patrons. Of course if you score one of these few booths,
you tend not to leave for several hours! These booths all have an
ocean view. There's also a very modern outdoor fireplace and plenty
of casual seating.
Besides shops, there are also quite a few restaurants in the mall. But
we decided to try out the food court just to see if there's anything exciting.
The indoor food court is extremely spacious. Since it's brand
new, it's also very clean. But much to our disappointment, the food
places are overpriced and not very good. There's a Japanese/Chinese
place and a Mexican place. Both are not very good.
Overall, the mall is worth seeing if you've never been. It's very
posh and "LA." But we won't be going there for any shopping nor dining
again. I still love Third Street Promenade and will swing by the mall
if we go to Third Street.

A picture of the indoor food court. The place is pretty big, it
continues to wrap around to the right. Can you find Mr. BAW and Baby? :-)
If you do visit the mall, I recommend walking out to Third Street and
grabbing food at the various restaurants on Third Street, much better food!

Bigger isn't always better! Take a look at these giant clams I
found at the local Marukai Market. They are literally the size of
my hand. Being a shellfish lover, I was super excited to find these
for a very reasonable price. I decided to steam them in some garlic.
Just as I had suspected, they were not as flavorful as their smaller
counterparts. The meat was tougher and less clammy.
In Japan, we tried these giant edamame at
a grill restaurant. These edamame were gigantic, each pea the size
of my hand! I can't find any pictures on the internet and I regret
to say that I forgot to take a picture of them at the restaurant. But
much to our disappointment, the giant edamame were not as good as the normal-size
ones. So folks, giant versions of foods aren't always better. Except
for crab and lobsters... :-)

September sixth was our 2nd wedding anniversary and I got these gorgeous
roses from Mr. BAW. I've never been one to remember dates, so I
had actually forgotten that it was our anniversary! So I was pleasantly
surprised by the roses.
Last year, for our first anniversary, we took a little trip to New York City. I had never been to New York and have
always wanted to. We had a blast and I love Manhattan and will no
doubt go back to visit again. The New York trip was also our little
"babymoon" before the birth of our little bundle of joy.
Fast forward to one year later and here he is, trying to grab the roses.
I can't believe he's almost nine months old! He's been in
the world almost as long as he was in the womb! :-) We can
barely remember how life was without Baby.
Early September was also my friend TNK's birthday, her first birthday
as a Mommy! Happy birthday and hope that your little boy gave you
a big present! :-)
Looking forward to many, many more anniversaries to come with more
new adventures as a family.
