They say that everyone in LA is connected to show business somehow.  It's true.  My connection to show biz is throught El Dwag.  My buddy is a TV writer.  He's unique, funny, a closet nerd, and a fantastic friend.  He just celebrated a zero birthday!!  We dropped the kids off with my parents and got to celebrate with El Dwag at a swanky, industrial brewery in the heart of Downtown LA.

It's certainly been a while since we visited Downtown LA.  It used to be that, if you value your life, there are certain parts of Downtown LA you should not visit after sunset.  There are still those places, but in the last decade, the city has been trying to attract more young people to move to some parts of Downtown by building fancy lofts and creating a modern, urban vib.  With that naturally comes hip bars, fancy restaurants, and fabulous eateries.  They've even created these cute little parklets complete with exercise equipment right on the side walks!   Thanks to El Dwag, Mr. BAW and I got to see the hip part of Downtown LA.

Happy birthday to El Dwag, so glad that you're always going to be in LA and we'll get to keep up with your glamourous life!

We took advantage of Presidents' Day and the long weekend to take a quickie trip up to San Francisco to visit my friend TNK and for us to meet her new baby boy who is already 7 months old!

We drove up and stopped by the outlet stores at Gilroy on the way up and visited Standford on the way back down.  The kids did well on the drive.  We were extremely lucky to avoid rain our entire trip.

Some highlights of the trip are the kids' first ride on the cable car, first visit to the new Exploratorium, a taste of the Roli Roti pork sandwich at the Ferry Building, and of course, meeting Baby Alex!  Oh, and I also enjoyed finally seeing the inside of the Standford Memorial Church.

We spent time at the Sue Bierman Park at The Embarcadero.  The kids had an absolute blast!

Salty pork, crispy skin, and drippy fat.  What more does one need in a sandwich??

Due to a business trip, I had to play the role of a single-working-mother-of-two-plus-a-dog for a few days last week and it's been hard work to say the least!  But things have definitely been more manageable now that Ahgoo is almost 23 months old.  She's much more independant than her older brother.  The two siblings have very differnent personalities.  Buzz is very social and likes to play with other people.  He prefers to be taken care of, being fed, being dressed, and being read to.  Ahgoo can play by herself for a much longer time.  She prefers to do things herself, constantly saying, "myshelf! myshelf!" when I try to feed her.  Buzz likes for us to read every single word on the page when being read to.  Ahgoo prefers to turn the page even before we finish reading the page, to see what else is ahead!  With new food, Buzz takes the approach of "I don't want to try unless I KNOW it's good."  Ahgoo takes the approach of "I will try any food until I learn that it doesn't taste good."  But despite the differences, Buzz and Ahgoo are definitely best friends.  I asked Ahgoo who she her favorite person to play with at school is and, without hesitation, she said Buzz!  Ahgoo HAS to do EVERYTHING Buzz does!  She echos everything he says and copies every movement he makes.  It is quite adorable.  Because of her desire to mimic her older brother, I feel like she's more advanced than Buzz was at the same age.  Buzz is very protective of Ahgoo and makes sure we never leave her behind where ever we go.

Being Chinese, birth order is a concept we learn early on.  Historically, Chinese people places huge significance on birth orders to determine wealth inheritance and family responsibilities.  Any country that has a monarchy knows the importance of birth order!  Although much of the significance of the birth order has diminished in modern times, I still believe that there are still strong influences shaping our personality.  I think some of that comes naturally.  Being the first born, parents are much more coddling and perhaps making more mistakes.  Maybe this fosters a more dependant and cautious personality?  Second and later born children never experience whole parental attention.  So they are more independant?  I've also noticed that in our family, Buzz is the only oldest child!   Both Mr. BAW and myself are the youngest in our family.  I definitely notice that we're less tolerant of Buzz's "oldest child" traits, such as his need for help constantly, even on things we know he can do.  We also don't understand his apprehension to try new foods.  I wonder how having two "last-born" parents will affect Buzz growing up.  How about Ahgoo, we'll probably unconciously "connect" with her more.  Having an older brother myself, I definitely find myself protecting her more from Buzz.  Sometimes I have to stop myself from over-protecting her when they fight over a toy.

Besides children, I've noticed couples relationships being shaped by birth order.  Mr. BAW and I have a very compatible relationship.  We rarely fight or bicker.  We understand each other very well.  Growing up, my parents bicker all the time.  They've been married for over 40 years but they bicker almost daily!  Of course, they love each other deeply, but they also love to bicker!  Haha, I attribute that to their birth order.  My father is on the oldest end of the spectrum and my mother the youngest.  So everything my father says sounds condesending to her.  How do I know that??  Because I'm also the youngest!  What about your family?  Is your spouse the same birth order as you?  Are your children?  Who do you relate best to?  Most of my close friends happen to be the youngest in their family!  Coincidence?  Boy, if I was a sociology major, this would be my thesis!
