FREEDOM TRAIL
It seems like I always start off a blog entry with how time seems to fly. But here we are, almost half way through the year and we're speeding to the end of the 22-23 school year! The kids are already getting ready for summer. Ahgoo is about to graduate from elementary school and our family will be completely done with the school we've been at for the past eight years! It's going to be pretty bittersweet. Both our kids spent their entire elementary years in one school...that is something foreign to me since I've not only been to three different elementary schools, I've switched to a new country in the middle of elementary school. Which is why I wanted it to be more stable for our kids.
Before we get ahead of of ourselves, let's get back to March! As I mentioned in the
last blog, we spent our Spring Break this year in Portland Maine and Boston. Although Portland was charming and sweet, Boston is very much my kind of town! I'm definitely a big city girl and I had so much fun in Boston, I have to show you everything we did in Boston in several blog posts! We were extremely lucky with the weather, you'll see in my pictures below that we had amazing blue skies the entire time we were in Boston. It only rained the morning we were leaving. I had been to Boston when I was in graduate school, to attend a friend's wedding. I had fun and on of my friends took us to see Boston College where he went to school and we even saw a few of the Freedom Trail sites. But I was in Boston for only a weekend and had obligations of a wedding to attend. So this time, I wanted to do it all! Plus, Ahgoo just did the Walk Through American Revolution and what better way to learn about the Revolution than to see the actual sites!! So we decided to walk/bus through all 18
Freedom Trail sites! Our friends from Boston told us that very few people will see all the sites in one day but I was determined, so determined that I was ready to do the entire Freedom Trail in the rain if necessary! Thank goodness we had amazing weather that day. The kids were troopers and we all had a great time. We even stumbled upon a free tour of the Massachusetts State House and got to see both the
Sacred Cod and the Holy Mackerel! Most of the sites on the Freedom Trail are walkable. Then we took the bus across the CHarles River to see the last two sites, the USS Constitution and the Bunker Hill Monument. I secretly had a backup plan, if the kids got too tired or cranky, we'd skip going across the river and skip the last two sites. However, it turned out that the kids enjoyed the last two sites the most! Haha, glad we stopped for lunch and didn't skip seeing them. However, I do not recommend dining in Quincy Market, everything was expensive and not very good. Better find a place to eat at
North End. In general, I found food and drink to be very expensive in Boston. My regular Starbucks drink cost a whole dollar more in Boston! The one other regret I have is I should not have climbed all the way to the top of the Bunker Hill Monument! The view was not worth it and I was entirely sore the next day!
Two funny things that we encoutered was that it was only after seeing half the sites did we realized that the Freedom Trail is marked by a red brick road, to see the sites, you just have to follow the red brick! But of course we didn't know and I had to keep looking at my phone to follow Google's path to get to the next site. So I look like a stupid tourist...I guess we look like tourists no matter what! The other sad/funny thing is that I was particularly looking forward to seeing the Old Corner Bookstore on the trail. But we kept walking pass it...and missing it. Finally, we realized that indeed the Old Corner Bookstore has become a Chipotle! The only sign of it is a pothole in front of the Chipotle! All of us could not believe that people would let this historic site turn into a Chipotle! So sad...
All in all, we had a blast walking the Freedom Trail. The kids really enjoyed the USS Constitution and we were blessed with perfect walking weather. Enjoy some of my pictures of the Freedom Trail!
