ORIGINAL FARMERS MARKET
You all know how much I love LA's
Grand Central Market. But, I also love LA's
Original Farmer's Market in Mid Town Fairfax. My In Laws came out to spend Easter with us last month and we took them to the Farmer's Market and enjoyed a nice lunch there. I love browsing the various food stalls and trying different foods. They also have a French market which carries a crazy amount of imported goods and adorable gifts. We took advantage that the kids had school on a Friday and got to the Market early, before the crowds started. Enjoy my pictures from our latest trip there.

AUTHORS AND BIOGRAPHIES
Although I'm only a blogger, I experience
writer's block occasionally! Sometimes I am very motivated to share on my blog even the mundane stuff of life while other times I just can't bring myself to write down even exciting and fun stuff happening in my life. Lately, work has been unstable and that's possibly the reason for my lack of blog inspiration. Other times, I've just been unmotivated and lacking in creative flows. Speaking of writer's block, last month, I inadvertantly showed the kids three biographical movies about three authors! We first watched
Miss Potter, the biographical life of
Beatrix Potter, the author of Peter Rabbit. The movie spans her life, moving seamlessly between childhood and adulthood. This is a really lovely moive, perfect for a little girl of ten! Ahgoo really like this movie, so do I. It has just enough drama for adults but still understandable for children. I thought that Ewan McGregor did a wonderful job as Norman Warne. We highly recommend this movie.
The next biographical movie we watched was Finding Neverland. This was a good movie about the life of playwrite who created Peter Pan, James Matthew Barrie. The movie was set during the time he was inspired to create Peter Pan. Both kids enjoyed the movie and both have read Peter Pan in school. Overall, I think it's a well done movie but in a more somber tone than Miss Potter.
The third author movie we saw was Mary Shelley. This was about the life of Frankenstein's author and the events that took place to inspire the book. This is a much more adult movie than the other two movies. But since Buzz had read Frankenstein, I thought he might enjoy the movie. There were enough parts about what inspired Mary Shelley for Buzz to understand without needing to comprehen the complex relationships between the progressive characters of the movie. But I certainly learned a lot from the movie and, subsequently, reading about Mary Shelley's life on Wikipedia. In particular, I did not know that her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, was a famous feminist of the time. Perhaps I would not recommend this movie to younger children, but the early teens will understand it and probably enjoy it. It is a darker movie than the other two.
Overall, I most enjoyed reading the biographies of these three authors after seeing the movie. I was surprised to find out that each author lived through some kind of tragedy in their lives. Ahgoo's favorite movie was Miss Potter. Buzz likes Finding Neverland the most. I find it also very interesting that all three movies casted an American actor to play the British/Scottish writers while the rest of the casts were British. But it is Hollywood afterall and it's not at all surprising that they would not care to cast a British actor to play a British writer.
I am still in awe that we are already in mid May and that we are getting ready for summer break! I am working on putting the kids' summer schedules together and preparing for the onslaught of sand in my house. Buzz will be doing Junior Lifegaurds this year, it's a very Southern California thing to do. Ahgoo will be doing surf camp as well. Since we live so close to the beach, I want to make sure the kids learn ocean safety. But that means treking pounds of sand into the house the next few months! I am still working on an outdoor "sandroom" where they will rinse off before coming into the house. We'll see how it works out. For now, I will leave you with a picture of my rose. My garden is already full of blooms and I am looking to see how my tomato plants will do this year.
