FALL SURPRISE!

Remember my epic 50th birthday trip to Montreal and Quebec? That was exactly what I wanted for my birthday so I was very happy. I thought that was it for birthday celebrations so I was completely unaware that there was a scheme brewing in the background for weeks. Turns out that Mr. BAW and my best friend TNK were planning a surprise dinner for me at my favorite sushi restaurant at Enya. But the best part of it all was that TNK and her family flew down from SF just to surprise me! Well, the best part of it all was that I got to see them all. She's got two boys and our kids all get along. Long story short, they all made me think that they were in town for a friend's wedding but was actually surprising me with dinner at Enya afterall. TNK also treated us to a nice afternoon at the pool at Terranea Resort, where they were staying. The kids had such an amazing time! I am thankful to have such wonderful friends.

Since the time change, Fall has offically arrived. Fall and winter are the two seasons I am most grateful for being able to work from home. One afternoon, I noticed a lovely afternoon light casting into the house. I just love how calm it made the whole room felt. Then, a few days later, our first major storm arrived! Luckily, I was working from home that day when heavy rain was predicted. Driving in the rain in LA is the absolute worst so I was glad to not have to commute to work that day. My co-worker told me that the roads I would've had to take to work were all flooded that morning! In the afternoon, I kept checking my weather app to see when the next wave of rain was going to hit. The app predicted that heavy rainfall was coming at 4pm. So I quickly decided to take Kepler out for his afternoon walk before the heavy rain hits. Luckily, I decided to bring along an umbrella. Just as we arrived at the local park (furthest from our house, of course), the sky opened up and dumped buckets of rain on us! In addition, strong winds were blowing my umbrella open! On top of that, Kepler was not ready to go home. So I had to drag him back the entire way, looking like the biggest idiot to drivers on the road! When we got back home, Kepler was completely soaked and not happy that his sniff and poop time was cut in half. Of course, he also did not want to be dried off. But I managed to get him to sleep on a towel! The worst part of it all was that by the time 4pm came around, the rain had completely stopped. Gotta love weather apps! When Ahgoo came home from school she made fun of me for trusting a weather app. Happy Fall, everyone!

FALL HAPPENINGS

Waaayyy back in February when I was still pondering how to pass the winter months quicker, my BIL introduced a Youtube video to us called "Backyard Squirrel Maze" by Mark Rober. After watching that amazing video, Ahgoo was inspired to make something for our own resident squirrels. We have at least two squirrels "living" in our backyard, meaning they come by regularly, splitting time between our yard and our neighbors' yards. Several of our neighbors, inlcuding us, have large pine trees in the yard so these guys just run along our fences, hoping from tree to tree. So Ahgoo names the two that we see regularly (they like to bury whole peanuts in my yard and planters) Zippy and Zella. So Ahgoo decides to build them a little cafe, since I love going to cafes so much. We got a little crate and picked up a few accessories from our local dollar store. She named the place The Nut House. She wanted to make it very sweet and homey so she put up plenty of decorations on the walls. There is a surf board hanging on the wall, a plant in the corner, and menus and daily hours are posted. The walls are also decorated with words like "Dream & Joy", "Books and Cake", and "Zip and Zel". It was all very cozy. However, after the cafe opened for business, it was quiet...very quiet for a few weeks. We served up walnuts on the table and they stayed there for weeks. No customers came. Soon, we kind of forgot about The Nut House...the colors started to fade, the signs were falling off the walls, and leaves and spider web started to form. I occasionally cleaned out the spider webs and pulled off the leaves but didn't do much else to keep it clean but complete forgot about the walnuts. Months, literally months went by. Summer came and went, we took trips, went about our lives. Then suddenly, in August, I caught Zippy come into The Nut House to order a Walnut Latte!!!! I think the squirrels were busy with mating season in the spring and summer and didn't think much about food. Then comes late summer and they start to prepare for winter and eating becomes their main focus. Suddenly, the squirrels were coming regularly, a few times a week looking for walnuts. After about a month, they would come by calling! I would then go out to put the walnuts on the table and they would wait around until I went into the house before coming into the cafe. Now, if they hear me call them, they will come down to the cafe! I am careful never to feed them by hand, always just leave the walnuts on the table for them. I also only leave two pieces per day. I don't want them to get too fat! I would still find peanut shells in our yard but they do love their walnut lattes. The most recent development is that both Zippy and Zella would come to the cafe at the same time, each taking one walnut and enjoying it sometimes on the rooftop terrace. Nothing is more cozy than a busy squirrel cafe, especially one with a pumpkin on the table!

I still can not believe that it is November already, October slipped by with a blink of the eyes. But it doesn't mean nothing happended in October. Of course the biggest event in October for us these days is the Halloween. We spent some time deciding what we want to be, how we would make our costumes, and what events we can attend. This year, Ahgoo's school have brought back the Fall Festival, after a two-year hiatus and a modified event last year, to its' full glory! That includes a haunted house in the MPR, booths for games, a bouncy house and maze, and food booths. This year, Ahgoo decided that she wants to be Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons. Since Mr. BAW was taking her to the school Fall Festival, he would then dress up as Homer Simpson. We tried to get Buzz to be Bart Simpson but sadly he refused. He also decided that he wanted to spend his own money to buy a costume. So in the end, he dressed up as some Anime character that I don't know of. I do miss my little boy who lets me make his costumes. But he's growing up and might not even trick or treat next year...until he sees how much candy Ahgoo brings home! Oh, and this year, I decided that the kids are old enough to enjoy a truly good scary movie for Halloween. So on Saturday night we watched The Omen all cuddled together on our bed! This is not only my favorite horror movie, it is on my top ten favorite movie of all times! Gregory Peck is one of my favorite actors of all times. The kids of course were freaked out, but at the same time, they kept talking about the movie even a week after we saw it! They talked about which parts were the creepiest. They are now old enough to understand the plot and even asked very intelligent questions like "Why him? why did they pick the him to give the baby to?" We all had a fun night and even though they were scared, they were also too tired to come back into our room that night! Now, off to start thinking about Christmas gifts and decorations...crazy...
