HAPPY AUTUMN

After a super busy summer with summer school and trips, we've settled into a the rhythm of Fall. But this year is special...we have a high schooler! Even though Buzz already has a high school grade under his belt (he completed his first high school course over the summer), it still feels very serious! Everything here on out counts on his college application!! I try not to put too much pressure on him but it does still feel very "heavy", right down to our course planning. We've already attended several college events on the high school campus. I have to keep reminding myself that it's a marathon and not a sprint with our kids. But the competitive nature of college admissions is always looming in the background. I know in the end, there are hundreds of college choices, even international ones. But I just want to give our kids the best chances at keeping all the doors open so they can choose rather than being chosen, if that makes sense.

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Back to October in LA! I've always say that September to October in LA is our true summer. While June, July, and even August often are completely clouded over, September and October is when we get our heat waves and sunny days. Although we don't have the beautiful Fall colors of the East, October is my favorite time of the year in LA. It's the calm after the hectic summer and before the craziness of the holidays. Just enough time to catch your breath and enjoy the warm sunshine before the cold and raining weather starts. Last Friday, Mr. BAW and I took a lunch date on my day off and we drove to Long Beach (1/2 hour south) to try a new Mediterranean restaurant in the middle of a very hip area of Down Town Long Beach called Ammatoli. The place is beautiful, full of plants. The food was very good, we shared some grilled meats and a Mediteeranean pizza. We also shared a thick-as-mud Turkish coffee, which was pretty amazing. Then we decided to slurge and shared a $20 ice cream dessert. Yes, we tried a twenty dollar ice cream. It had a flaky crust bowl, nuts, a tiny scoop of rice pudding, and some Turkish cotton cand on top. Yes, it was very good, just not $20 good. Haha, it was definitely a splurge.

Lastly, I wanted to share a picture of our lovely curly tailed lady, Zella, visiting The Nut House Cafe. Our resident squirrel had a litter about three months ago, I believe. She's only recently started to come down from the pine tree to ask for walnuts regularly. I think her babies are finally leaving the nest so she finally has time to herself...mothers are all alike, no matter the species! I think the squirrels are also getting ready to bulk up for the winter, even if it is LA winters! I keep a bag of walnuts in the kitchen handy for the squirrels when they come by to ask if The Nut House Cafe is open.

As we get into the darker and colder months, I want to share with you one of my favorite thing to do when I have some free time. I've been adicted to watching lectures from The Great Courses on my local library app, Kanopy. These are free college lectures that cover a huge variety of subjects. It's like attending college for free and not have homework or exams!!! I know some of you are not as excited about attending college lectures as I am, but I tell you it's the best thing since sliced bread. Imaging attending your favorite subject/class in your pajamas curled up on your couch or bed with your favorite snack and drink on a cold, rainy evening. My current addiction is "Foundations of Eastern Civilization." My favorite, though, is "Biochemistry and Molecular Biology: How Life Works." I love Dr. Kevin Ahern from Oregon State University, he is a fantastic lecturer. Be sure to check out your local library for free access to these amazing lectures. Happy Autumn everyone!
