MICHIGAN CENTRAL STATION

While in Michigan back in August, we also went to see the newly renovated Michigan Central Station. Apparently, the train station was in complete ruins, abandoned and graffitied. Here is a picture of it at its worse. But after years of renovation, Ford Motor Company have brought the train station back to life! We took a family visit to see the grand station and its was pretty amazing. Enjoy the pictures!

THE WHITNEY

On our trip to Michigan back in August, we celebrated a HUGE five-o birthday for Mr. BAW with his family. We celebrated with an adult-only dinner at The Whitney. The food was good, they have incredible crab cakes. But the most amazing thing about The Whitney is that the restaurant was originally the mansion home of David Whitney, the lumber baron and wealthiest man in Detroit at the time, and his family back in the 1800s. The architecture is pretty amazing and, like all famous mansions, this mansion is rumored to be haunted. They even have a Ghost Bar on the second floor. Although we didn't see any ghosts that evening, we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and tour of the mansion after. I definitely recommend a visit to The Whitney if you happen to find yourself in Detroit. Enjoy the pictures!

LA GRANGE INDIANA

Have you ever heard of La Grange, Indiana? I'm pretty sure most people have not heard of this tiny town in the middle of no where, well three hours southwest of Detroit Michigan no where...to be exact. The town is also extremely small, there is one main street and it is about maybe three blocks long. Why did we drive all the way from Detroit to La Grange back in August you ask? Well La Grange happens to be the town that Mr. BAW's father was born in and lived until he was 18. He lived in the same house for the first 18 years of his life. His father, Mr. BAW's grandfather, worked at the bank father-in-law owned and later became a member of the board of trustees. So when we were visiting my In-Laws in Michigan last month, I wanted the kids to see the town that their grandfather grew up in, the house he lived in, and see visit the graves of their great grandparents at the local cemetary.

As I mentioned, it took about three hourse for us to drive from my In-Laws' place in Detroit to La Grange so when we got to town, it was lunch time. Interestingly, Monday is the day that most restaurants in town are closed! And by most restaurants, I meant the two places to eat in town. So we were left with a bar which did not allowed kids because smoking was allowed (the scariest bar I've ever seen!) and a relatively new Mexican place hidden off the main street. Surprisingly, we had some very authentic tacos, they even serve tripe and beef tongue! Buzz loved this shrimp dish that Grandpa ordered and ate half of it. I joke that Buzz will not be able to get that shrimp dish anywhere else (I've never seen it before in any Mexican restaurant in LA) and he'd have to fly all the way to La Grange Indiana to get that dish again! After lunch we visited the bank that the family used to own they gave us such a welcoming tour of the entire bank. One lady who gave us a tour is actually a distant, distant cousin of us. After that, we grabbed donuts at Foltz's Bakery, the local bakery that was started by Grandpa's uncle and now owned by someone else. Grandpa and Mr. BAW both have fond memories of getting free cupcakes there when they were little. I had my doubts but the donuts are actually amazing, even better than Randy's Donuts!! Who would've thunk that La Grange Indiana is such a culinary town, with authentic Mexican tacos and incredible donuts!

Before we head out, we also visited Greenwood Cemetary where the kids great grandparents are buried. Then we drove about half an hour to the lake house Grandpa spent his childhood summers at. Mr. BAW also spent time there when he was little. The house is now owned by another family. The place is right on the lake and it was just beautiful and serene.

I really wanted the kids to see where their grandfather grew up and learn about that part of them. Maybe we won't make it back to La Grange for a long time but it was a wonderful experience, one we will not soon forget!
