NEW NORMAL LIFE

Due to the pandemic this year, we've taken only outdoors/nature trips. From the blog, it may look like we were on vacation all the time. But truth is, we've spent many "normal" days or new normal days at home, quarentined. The kids have just finished two weeks of remote "Summer Boot Camp" where the school district provided free "review" sessions in case many kids didn't follow many of the materials from last year due to the sudden transition to online learning. Ahgoo got a terrific boot camp teacher from another school in our district. Now, it's on to the new school year which starts in two weeks. I hope that this new construct will still be meaningful for Buzz who is starting his 5th and final year at this elementary school. Luckily, I went to the Sweetheart Dance last year with him. I initially was going to save it for his final year at the school.

I wanted to share a few new-normal pictures including evening walks with Kepler, adventures at the playground, Kepler's regular arguments with the neighbor dog, plenty of good old fashion belly rubs, and our little backyard squirrel, Zippy, enjoying his pine cones on my bench. Stay safe and enjoy the last bits of summer before school starts!

WATER DOG

During our visit to Three Rivers, we visited the Slick Rock Recreation for some swimming. Mr. BAW was determined to turn Kepler into a water dog! Up until that point, Kepler has never swam before. He's walked into water at a rocky beach before. But he's never fully swam before. So Mr. BAW was determined to let Kepler try out swimming.

Kepler, however, had other ideas. Like Toby, he is not a natural water dog, he's not shown us that he loves water. He tolerates baths better than Toby did. But he's not one to seek out water and jump into swimming pools or lakes. At Slick Rock, Kepler prefered to stay on the rocks with me, even when all the others are in the lake. Then, we had to really coax him into the water, first with throwing a giant stick into the lake. But he would gingerly walk into the lake, pull out the stick, and quickly run back onto the rocks and shake water onto me! Finally, after much calling and coaxing, he went fully into the lake and swam!! You can see the video I took of him swimming below. It was quite an achievement for Kepler!! But in the end, he still preferred dry land and would not jump into the lake like you see with other dogs. Mr. BAW was still very happy that he succeed in getting Kepler to swim. The kids had a blast at the lake, of course!
