OMG WHAT HAVE WE DONE?
I am the least impulsive person I've ever met. In fact, I hate being impulsive, I hate not planning, I dislike surprises. I never impulse buy, I keep an Amazon list of things that I ponder and think over for months before I actually buy anything. But life sometimes takes a strange turn and you suddenly become a different person.
A few weeks ago, on June 28 to be precise, Mr. BAW, Ahgoo, and I went to lunch in
San Pedro while Buzz was at Taekwondo training. We have not been down to San Pedro for a while and thought it'd be fun to grab a bite at the Whale and Ale British Pub. San Pedro is an interestig little port city. Some parts are admittedly sketchy but other parts are quirky. Well, while we were waiting for the restuarant to open, we went next door to a fun little record store where they also have some very interesting collectables like autographed movie posters and knick knacks. Then, Ahgoo wanted to go look at some cats at a Cat rescue center just a few storefronts down. I agreed to take her while Mr. BAW was still browsing the record store. I even jokingly told Mr. BAW not to spend any money on souvenirs or we'll get a cat. When we got to the rescue place, they happened to be hosting a major kitten adoption event. OMG, those kittens were soooooo CUTE! They were also setting up a trailer of even more cages of kittens. But our restaurant was opening and so I dragged Ahgoo to lunch, promising her that we would come back after lunch to see the trailer kittens.
After lunch, Mr. BAW went to put more money into our car meter while Aghoo and I went back to look at the trailer kittens. They had so many cages with piles of kittens in each. There was one cage with only one kitten (he was curled up sleeping by himself) and they told us that they keep kittens from the same litter together. The lone kitten's litter mates have all been adopted. That just sounded so sad to us! The adoption people asked if we wanted to hold any kittens. I just thought, why not...we're here, what's the harm? So Ahgoo picked this little yellow tabby kitten and they let us into a little room in the back of the trailer. The kitten was so rambunctious! He immediately jumped off Aghoo's lap and ran around the room. Oh, I told Aghoo to grab him and we immediately took him back to the adoption lady! But then Ahgoo wanted to hold the sleeping little yellow guy in his own cage. Ok, I said, one last kitten. When they placed him into Ahgoo's lap in the little room, this kitten immediately curled up and fell back to sleep. Then he started to purr! I think at that moment, this kitten put a magical spell on me because I blanked out...one thing led to another and I found myself talking to the adoption people about the process of adoption! By the time Mr. BAW came to join us from putting money into the car, I was already getting instructions and forms from the adoption lady! Mr. BAW was laughing at me.
We filled out paperwork and paid the adoption fee. They told us they needed to take care of a few more things before we can get the kitten so we went to pick up Buzz before going back to get the kitten. When we told Buzz, he was confused! We thought he'd love the idea of having a kitten, but he was actually not too thrilled! He kept asking us why we got a kitten and what about Kepler!??! Mr. BAW told him that in time, hopefully Kepler will have a little friend to play with. We went to pick up the kitten and Buzz warmed up to the idea once he held the kitty. Oh, and Mr. BAW immediately named the kitten, he said that since we made a decision without him, he gets to name the cat. So what name did he pick??
Copernicus! What a BIG name for a tiny kitten (about two lbs at around 10 weeks old). Mr. BAW says that Copernicus matches Kepler perfectly, I couldn't agree more. Turns out that Copernicus is just as smart as Kepler!
Fast forward to two weeks now...Copernicus and Kepler can tolerate each other. The first day or two, Copernicus would hiss at Kepler whenever he sees Kepler. At firs Kepler wanted to sniff Copernicus but after being hissed, Kepler is not too happy. Now, Kepler is somewhat weary of Copernicus and walks away if we bring Copernicus to him. They are working on getting along...Copernicus has sat on Kepler's tail and leg when they are both calm. But we're taking things very slowly. The adoption people tell us to never let Kepler chase Copernicus because once that happens, it's very hard to break that behavior. Thankfully, Copernicus is very affectionate, he loves people and loves to be with us. Ahgoo said that Toby was a cat-dog but Copernicus is a dog-cat and Kepler is just a dog-dog! We are now a very busy family of six!

BUTTERFLY LOVERS
Mr. BAW recently reconnected with a friend who is a professional cellist. Through his invitations, we've attended a few classical music concerts. It's been a real eye opener, or ear opener I should say. The last concert we attended was at the
Long Beach Symphony. It was an amazing concert! I have to say that throughout my life, I've never been a musical person. I don't go to concerts much, let alone classical music concerts. We used to go to the Hollywood Bowl because we enjoy picnicking outdoors in the cheap seats section while enjoying music. But after this last concert at the Long Beach Symphony, I'm learning to enjoy classical music much more! In particular, there was a guest violinist from China,
Gao Can, who performed a violin solo composed for the famed
Legends of the Butterfly Lovers. The legends tells of a woman who disguised as a man to attend school and fell in love with a classmate who does not know the woman's true identity. After he finds out that she's a woman, the two fell in love. But alas, the woman's family arranged for her to marry someone else and the man died of sadness. When she heard this, she went to his grave and asked the grave to open up and take her as well. Legend has it that when the grave opened up, she threw herself into it and both of them emerged as butterflies. This legendary love story originated during the Tang Dynasty around 8th century AD, way before Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet. The
Butterfly Lovers' violin concerto was composed in 1935 but was banned during China's Cultural Revolution. Now, people recognize the beauty of the music that combines Eastern and Western cultures and sounds. I was completely mesmurized by the music, it was pure beauty. Although this performance is not by Gao Can, you can get a sense of the beauty of Butterfly Lovers
here. I am so glad we got to hear it performed by an amazing violinist.
Lastly, let's talk about the giraffe in the room! I believe it was a loaner art display because I could not find anyting on the Long Beach Theater about it. But I did find that it was designed by a talented 33 year old Italian artist,
Marcantonio Brandolini. It was quite stunning, I took two pictures, one against the blue skies before the show started and one at nigt after the show. Overall, a beautiful experience that evening. I hope to experience more classical music in the future.
