IRONY

I had been planning for June 10 for a while now. It was the first day of summer break for the kids and it happened to fall on my Friday off from work. So Mr. BAW decided to take the day off as well so we can have a family fun day! I started to browse the web for a museum to visit because it's been a while since we've taken the kids to a museum. I initially had planned on going to the Long Beach Art Museum and dining at Claire's, a restaurant at the museum with an awesome ocean view. After that, we can head over to stroll the shops at Belmont Shores in Long Beach. Sounds like a good day right? Well, turns out the day before, I found out that the museum and the restaurant are both closed that day so that they can change their exhibits!!! Ugh, so I scoured google maps for something else to do with the family. I knew that POTUS was visiting LA because Summit of Americas was going on in DTLA. We've had road closures all over LA, especially Downtown area the past few days that week. So I was purposely avoiding going anywhere near DTLA. I even nixed the ideas of going to Pasadena or Westwood just because the freeways connected to DTLA. Then I had a thought, why don't we take the kids to see the USS IOWA in San Pedro? We live only 10 miles away and we've never been to the museum. Plus, we would be headed south, no where near DTLA nor POTUS.

That Friday morning, we were all very excited to head to the USS Iowa, I wanted to get there right as they open at 10am. It's also a fun coincidence that my BIL and his family live in Iowa. The kids have also been to Hawaii to see the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. So we were excited to be able to go on an actual battleship like the one that sank at Pearl Harbor. When we got to San Pedro, we started to see police cars at every intersection. I was thinking that maybe there's a high school graduation at the USS Iowa. After we parked along another street, Mr. BAW walked up to ask a traffic police what was going on. Turnsd out that POTUS was speaking at USS Iowa that morning at 10:30am! The worst of all is that the museum was closed for the day due to the POTUS visit! Such irony that the very person I was trying very hard to avoid was crashing my museum party! I was very disappointed and mad that they couldn't have posted on their website (which I checked the night before) that the museum was going to be closed. They didn't have to give the real reason, for security reasons.

As we walked around the place pondering what to do, someone by the pier with a police badge told us that POTUS would be arriving by helicopter and that it will land on the battleship. His arrival was any moment! So we decided to wait around, along with a photographer, by the pier. After about 15 minutes, the police badge person received a call on her cell that they had cancelled the helicopter ride due to the heavy marine layer (which you can see in all of my pictures below) and that he came by car and was already on the ship! Since we waited by the pier, we missed the car brigade (you can see all the black cars in my picture below) driving up to the front of the battleship! So then we decided to go over to the front of the ship and wait to see if we can catch POTUS coming off the ship after his speech. Sadly, we waited another 20 minutes but the kids were bored and hot and complaining about being hungry. So we ended up leaving to grab lunch without getting even a glimpse of POTUS!

So that's my sad story of the day POTUS stalked me and ruined our museum day. But we'll be back next time for a proper visit to the USS Iowa!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

It is so funny how different children can be. When Buzz was in 4th grade, he wasn't interested in joining too many school activities. But Ahgoo wanted to participate in tons of activities. She ran for student council, she performed in a school talent show, she made and sold bracelets at the school market place, and she wanted to go to the school Sweetheart Dance. So in return, we got to experience all of these activities at school as well! I even went on Youtube and learned how to give Ahgoo a fancy updo for her Sweetheart Dance with Dad. I also helped her make bracelets for her to sell at school. She sold 17 bracelets that evening and made some spend money for herself! We also attended the school talent show for the first time in 6 years at this elementary school!

That was most of our May, busy with school activities. Then, at the end of May we flew to Iowa to attend our nephew's high school graduation. It was a quick long weekend trip. But we also celebrated two 80th birthdays, my FIL and our SIL's father. I was very, very nervous about our flights over Memorial Day weekend. On our way to Iowa, we flew to Dallas then to Moline. We got to Moline at close to midnight. But with the two-hour difference I knew the kids could handle the late arrival. But on the way back to LA, our layover was in Chicago. I HATE flying into O'Hare, no matter what your connections are you will surely have to run clear across the airport to catch it. Luckily, we had a two-hour layover and was able to make our way to the connecting gate leisurely. But there were others on our flight who had to rush off the plane to catch their connecting flights, including our friends who were on the same flight from Moline. AMAGINGLY, our flight out of O'Hare ws only 15 minutes delayed and we made it back to LA uneventfully. It was only the next day we heard from some friends that they had cancelled ~100 flights to LAX due to shortage of pilots! It also helped that we flew in and out of John Wayne airport instead of LAX. Eventhough it is another hour's drive home for us, we have much better control of time driving.

So here we are, half way done with 2022 and the kids are done with 4th and 6th grades! Summer is a whole different schedule and my garden continues to evolve. I have planted some eggplants and the usual tomato plants. We'll see how this growing season will be. Happy summer and I am trying to stay more relaxed with kids out of school...wish me luck!
