SPRING HAS SPRUNG
Time does not stop for anything, not even the Coronavirus. It's been six weeks since our quarantine. Since the first week, I've pretty much kept everyone to a regular schedule. I find that it benefits everyone, including Kepler, to be on a regular schedule. During the week days, the kids still wake up at around 7 to 7:15am. By the time they are done with getting dressed and eating breakfast, they start "school" promptly at 8am. Then they spend a good hour and a half to two hours working on their assignments (posted by their teachers online) for the week. Then, by 9:45am, they get a quick snack and I put on an educational show for them to watch at 10am. They went through the entire series of
One Strange Rock on Netflix. They are on the series
Wild Kratts now, which they loved even before the quarantine. Then, at 11am they get a recess, during that time I usually prepare lunch. Then at about 11:30am, we eat lunch. We ususally discuss what they've learned on the shows they watch at that time. Then at about 12:30pm, they start another session of school work, ususally some kind of reading or online work. Then, they will have about 1/2 hour of P.E. They would watch an online exercise show and follow along, I like
Cosmic Kids Yoga but they also do some aerobics workout too. Then class gets done at around 3pm and I let them have some screen time like playing a video game with their friends online. Then at about 4:30 to 5pm, when I get off work, we will take Kepler out for a walk. This has been a great schedule for our family as Mr. BAW and I are able to work efficiently from home. The times of the schedule is flexible enough that I can delay showing them the educatonal video, for example, from 10am til 11am if I have a meeting at 11am. Or I can move it up sooner if I have a sooner meeting. Other times, Mr. BAW would come and stay with them while I attend a meeting. But most of the time, I can manage pretty well with the kids.
I am just so greatful that they are older now and require much less supervising than if they were toddlers! I can see how this quarantine can be trying for other families with really young kids. For us, the kids have been very good with following our schedule. They still have some difficult moments when they beg for me to "let them out of school" earlier or asking for a "longer recess". But for the most part, they are great kids and understand when I ask them to leave me alone for an hour because I'm on a telecon. They can pretty much work on their assignments independently, I only have to give minimal instructions to get them started and answer questions occasionally. This, I credit their teachers. But for most of the day, our house is very quiet because everyone is working on their own work. Kepler goes down to his den after the kids finish their breakfast and sleeps til we take him out for a walk later in the afternoon. To Kepler, the quarantine has not affected his day.
Last week, we had some cooler weather with some heavy cloud cover. But this week, and in the coming weeks, we've been warming up with some lovely sunshine. My garden is starting to bloom! It's been very exciting to see tons of roses buds sprouting out. But that means two things I have to watch out for, my allergies and Kepler! Thanks to the rain and sunshine, my allergies have been horrendous, I've had to take an antihistamine almost everyday. Then, with Kepler, I have to keep an eagle eye on him when he's hanging out in our backyard because he loves to chew on my plants! He would "prune" my roses for me if I let him. But, both of these "problems" are worth having in exchange for a beautuil backyard! Luckily, those peacocks have not attacked my plants since they've been known to eat flowers. We had about 7 peacocks in our backyard the other day! In any case, I just want to share some of my flowers with you and hope that this warmer weather will slow the Coronavirus down. Stay safe and happy Spring!

SOCIAL DISTANCING
Social distancing will be the phrase of the decade! I feel like this is a test of a future battle with an alien species. How has the world responded? Is it like in the movies where all the world leaders come together to form a coalition against a common enemy? It doesn't seem like the world is doing too well fighting this common enemy. The US definitely did not play a leading role like they do in all those Hollywood movies. We have no end in sight, the school closures have kept extending. Now, it's not looking like we're going back to school until the Fall.
How will the world change in so many months? What is the new normal? Will our favorite restaurants still be there for us to enjoy in the Fall? Will retail stores still be the same? What industries have fallen and what industries have risen due to the Coronavirus. Online meeting hosts have trived. Restaurants have suffered, but I believe that if they can survive this, they will rebound. People miss dining out and will be dining out in droves once we are back to normal. We've been ordering take out often, both to support local businesses and to save our food reserves for possible tougher times.
These are definitely strange times. So I just wanted to post some normal pictures, pictures of our walk with Kepler through some of our neighborhood. Last Sunday, we took a walk down to the coastline. Although the beaches are close, we can still walk along the neighborhood streets above the beach. We're definitely warming up for spring. We've had some rain and are expecting a little more rain. But it's definitely not a wet El Nino year. So we've had some really warm and lovely days. This happened to be one of them. Hopefully, we will all survive through these strange times and come out stronger and wiser.
