FREE LIMES
Is there such a thing as too much of a good thing? Or is it that I just haven't discover a solution to my problem yet. That was definitely the case for me last summer and this fall...until recently. So our lime tree has been SUPER productive and I ended up with an enormous bumper crop the past two seasons. I don't even pick the limes, I let them stay on the tree until they drop on their own so all of my limes are yellow. But they are amazing limes, super thin skin and extremely juicy. For the past 6 months, they've just been falling off the trees, maybe about 7 or 8 limes per day. So I would pick them up and collect them into a basket in my yard. The really perfect ones, I'd take them into the kitchen and use them for cooking or adding the juice into my drinks. You can see how quickly the limes add up though. I've given them to my neighbors, I've given them to family. But the limes just kept falling. I ended up throwing away the limes as the bottom ones just rotted away. Pretty soon, I was throwing a lot of limes into our green bin! This actually became a source of stress for me because I just hate waste!
Then one day, I had an epiphany, why not give away the limes to strangers?? We actually live on a cul-de-sac. However, our street doesn't just end with homes, it actually ends at a trail head. So we do get some foot traffic from dog walkers and some local hikers, especially on weekends. I brought out a ceramic planter and put it right at the corner of our front yard with a "Free Limes" sign. I was cautiously optimistic and thought that maybe a few would be taken. Well, after one day, the entire batch (maybe about 20 limes) were all taken!! You would not believe the joy in my heart! Now, after weeks of this, I'm finally slowly running low on fallen limes. But guess what? The tree already has tons of blooms! But now, I'm not too stressed about too many limes. Oh, I may even make a permanent, waterproof "Free Limes" sign to replace my paper bag sign! Our lemon tree is also a heavy producer but I do use the lemons to make lemonade.
